December Bushcare Working Bee Rogers Reserve 2019

6th December 2019

Our last bushcare working bee for the year today. Further asparagus weed was removed and rubbish picked up and disposed of properly or collected for recycling. Thanks to everyone who has helped out this year again managing this special patch of dry rainforest in the middle of Highfields. We hope we will receive some much needed rain and some of our precious wildflowers may appear this summer. Lots of birds observed including two juvenile Pale-headed Rosellas with their parents.

Genius Childcare Bush Kindy at Rogers Reserve Highfields

2nd December 2019

Kindy students from Genius Childcare Highfields had a "Bush Kindy" field trip today to the Charles and Motee Rogers Bushland Reserve.  This is an update from their teacher:

Today in kindy we took advantage of the beautiful breeze and went of on an adventure to bush kindy. We especially went in search of hollows armed with our book “a hollow is a home” and we looked to see if we could find hollows of different sizes. We found large and small hollows and even saw one in use by a pair of galahs. We wondered if they had their little chicks or fledglings inside.

The girls spotted a kookaburra, and this is a “hollow dependant species” as they use hollows for breeding. We saw a VERY large hollow and we were also fascinated spotting tree hollows that had fallen to the ground to make homes for ground animals.

It was fun to find a hollow and then research (using our book) to learn which animals would use them.

The Kindy Students and teachers are regular visitors and care-takers to the Rogers Reserve, picking up rubbish and doing plant and fauna surveys. We greatly appreciate the updates from Miss Sarah and the teachers. The students have also applied for a grant to do tree planting in areas where lantana has been removed and it is now sparse.

Highfields Resident Complains trees are over her head height at the Reserve

27th November 2019

Highfields resident of 2 years, Michele Eaton from has gone to 7 News to complain about the Charles and Motee Rogers Bushland Reserve at Highfields, saying it needs to be "cleared up" and that the scrub was "over her head height" and that it is "dangerous for people". The complaint came at the time of the Pechey Hampton Bushfires and we certainly understand that people were on high alert. However, these types of ignorant and ill-informed views of  remnant dry rainforest, create fear mongering in the public which is very disappointing. She claims that she had to get hoses to help prepare to put out a recent purposely lit fire in the middle of the reserve, when this is not what was reported by the Rural Fire Brigade or TRC environment staff who were first on the scene.

It is very disappointing that residents such as Michele, who choose to live across from such bushland at the reserve and also on Clark Road, have no or little understanding or interest in what a bushland reserve is, and are only used to seeing mown parks with scattered trees. They are often ignorant to the fact that this is an endangered ecosystem and her property where she lives, once looked just like this!!  One would question why such a person would choose to live across to such a location when there are plenty of places in Highfields to live that are void of any trees and bush? We are pleased that this attitude is not one shared with majority of local residents, many of whom chose to live near the reserve on purpose so they could experience nature and appreciate it.

We are disappointed 7 news did not contact the Friends of Rogers Reserve for comment, as we could have informed them about the fire management plan for the reserve and the fact that the Rural Fire Brigade and TRC have already had many discussions and on-site evaluations of the bushland and that the recent small fire was an act of vandalism. We are told that the suspect is most likely a local person frustrated with the lack of action by council (in their opinion) on a hazard burn during the peak bushfire season as it coincides with a very recent demand that wasn't acted on for valid safety reasons.

Full news article can be watched below.

We note that we have personally invited Michele Eaton and all O'Brien Road & Clark Road residents to attend our bushcare group working bees and for a walk through the reserve to talk to experts about it, but she has not attended as of yet (June 2020)

Biology Students at the Rogers Resere

28th October 2019

YEAR 11 BIOLOGY STUDENTS FROM HIGHFIELDS STATE SECONDARY COLLEGE

Thanks to the teachers for this wonderful update from the latest work by students at the Rogers Reserve, Highfields.

Year 11 Biology students finalised their field studies on Friday at Charles and Motee Rogers Reserve. Collection of data was capped off with invertebrate surveys, biodiversity site assessments and groundcover surveys. Students were wowed by the observations of a plethora of native species including laughing Kookaburras, squawking Lorikeets, King Parrots, Galahs and Cockatoos, wooping Bronzewings, buzzing Bees and a bounding Wallaby. How amazing to have this across the road from our school! Thank you Amaroo Environmental Education Centre for all your wisdom and 'know-how'.

Bush Kindy Outing at Rogers Reserve

16th September 2019

Milestones Kindy (now Genius Childcare Highfields) had their weekly Bush Kindy outings at the Charles and Motee Rogers Bushland Reserve in September.  This is an update from their visits.

Our first bush kindy wearing our new Milestones tshirts and didn't we look smart. Today we were all shocked at how dry the bushland was and we have been wondering how we can support the animals in these conditions.

Thankyou again for the updates and the continued student and teacher involvement at the Charles & Motee Rogers Bushland Reserve at Highfields.

Bush Kindy Litter Collection at Rogers Reserve

July 2019

Milestones Bush kindy Update from the Charles & Motee Rogers Bushland Reserve, Highfields for July 2019.

Last week we enjoyed yet another Bush Kindy. While we were there we explored our natural environment, engaged in some bird spotting and listening for bird calls that we recognised, collected resources and of course our mission of the day cleaning up the bush land. We picked up litter from all around the place. Cleaning up the bush land and creating a positive change in our community.

Now and then comparison of fig tree at Rogers Reserve

7th June 2019

A little NOW & THEN comparison of the resilience of native trees- even in drought. You may remember back in August 2015 we discovered that one of the native Fig Trees growing from an old tree stump was mysteriously cut down? It was rather strange as it wasn’t anyone from our bush-care groups or council and it was a total mystery. Fortunately whoever cut it down didn’t poison it and left to its own devices it has been re-growing. The photo on the left taken today 7th June 2019 and it’s looking amazing (albeit a different shape than it was before) nature sure is resilient!
